This POP UP art show was held on Woi-wurrung Country. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community.

This group exhibition was held on Saturday 29 March, along Merri Creek Trail in Coburg, Melboure and was the culmination of events where guests created spontaneous artworks through playful art games, guided by materials and instructions curated by Kerry Lennon. It pays homage to pre-war European art, a time when modern art was emerging, and the avant-garde served as its surreal counterpart. During this period, small groups of artists, writers, and free thinkers hosted dinner parties that became vibrant hubs of free expression, creativity, and safe spaces for queer, feminist, and non-conformist voices.

Surrealism challenged the mainstream with its anti-art approach, using found objects like newspapers and books to champion collage, chance, and performance. It embraced creating art without literal meaning while uncovering meaning in the process. For this show, we’ve continued that tradition, using chance and play to explore the idea that everything is art and everyone is an artist.
